The St Andrews Economic Forum is a student-organised conference encouraging active debate on important economic issues. It promotes an intergenerational dialogue between today’s experts and future leaders. By bringing together leading figures in academia, politics, the public sector and business with a selection of outstanding students, we hope that one generation may teach and engage with the next one. The emphasis is on fostering critical awareness amongst students, enabling leaders of tomorrow to better address issues crucial to our future.
The topic in 2009 is: Oil – Challenges and Opportunities.
With 37 percent of world energy consumption supplied by oil, oil is the most important
energy resource in the world. Although, this figure is currently estimated to drop to 33 percent
by 2030, it is clear that oil is to remain the dominant fuel type in the future. With oil
production at about 83.6 million barrels (1 barrel = 159 liter) a day, the petroleum industry is
the single largest industry in the world. In our panel discussions on Peak Oil, the Pricing of Oil
and Oil Conflicts, we aim to create awareness about the challenges and opportunities
regarding the most important aspects of the oil debate.
The conference takes place for its second time in St Andrews, Scotland from 1 – 3 May 2009.
Application deadline: 24th of April 2009.
