The WSC-SD Focus Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development was initiated at the S3 in Zurich in January with the idea of getting students together to discuss ESD and not just listen to what other people have to say about ESD. The overall idea of the Focus Meeting is to let students from all over the world share knowledge on ESD with eachother. This is meant to take place through three days of workshops and short seminars during the Focus Meeting. The focus will be on the participation of all the meeting participants in the workshop discussions and seminars.
Reasons for the Focus Meeting
One extra reason for having a focus meeting on ESD is that Chalmers University of Technology (Göteborg, Sweden) and the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) will host an international conference on Engineering Education on Sustainable Development (EESD ‘10) in Göteborg in September 2010. Chalmers Students for Sustainability (CSS) and the WSC-SD will help with the organizing of the EESD ‘10 conference. In order to really push forward student opinions on ESD, a document will be created based on the workshops and seminars during the WSC-SD Focus Meeting on ESD where we can state student opinions on ESD. This will help develop the EESD ‘10 conference in a direction envisioned by students from the WSC-SD.
This document on student opinions on ESD could also be used by local WSC-SD SC’s to promote ESD in their home universities and home countries since the document can be used to express student opinions from a wider base than just the local SC members.
Also, Chalmers University of Technology holds the UNESCO chair on ESD which means that we will be able to present the document and our opinions directly to the UNESCO chairholder after the Focus Meeting.
