The Green Earth Club was established on the 2ndJune 2008, at a meeting held in YMCA Central, bringing together BMC Nairobi South and Students for Global Sustainability -University of Nairobi members. This was a follow up of deliberations and aspirations developed through various members’ interactions in networks such as the Y’s Men’s Club, Eastern Africa Environmental Network conferences, among others.
The major objective was to initiate a club that would advocate for and organise activities aimed at creating ‘green’ YMCA branches and involve youth and the broader society to work together towards combating environmental degradation, improving air quality in both living and work environments through hands-on, interactive approaches targeting building the members’ positive atttitude towards environmental stewardship.
SfGS through the Green Earth club marked the world environmental day by planting a total of 150 trees at the YMCA Nairobi South branch grounds. The tree species planted were Elgon teak, Olive tree, Wabuga Ugandensis, Prunus Africana and Croton Megalocapus.

WHAT NEXT?
SfGS -UoN is working in collaboration with the club to form a critical link between the Club and the wider youth acedemia. SfGS has already approached the University of Nairobi’s administration to undertake a tree planting exercise, in liasion with the Green Earth Club, at the university. This is expected to take place soon.
Green Earth is pursuing the potential of working with schools interested in establishing a good and positive appreciation of environmental stewardship.
